DIGHTON — Police Chief George Nichols would like to provide an update on the investigation into Saturday evening’s crash on Tremont Street.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, at approximately 6:18 p.m., a Dighton Police officer witnessed a grey Mercedes sedan take a sharp right turn from Somerset Avenue onto Old Somerset Avenue while traveling at a high rate of speed.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle proceeded to accelerate westbound down Tremont Street. In the area of 465 Tremont St., the car veered off the road, struck a utility pole and then a tree, and rolled over, coming to a rest upright.
The passenger of the vehicle, a 19-year-old Taunton man, is believed to have been ejected from the car as a result of the crash.
The Dighton Fire Department transported the man via ambulance to a landing zone. He was then transported by MedFlight to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries that were believed to be life-threatening.
The passenger remained hospitalized Sunday, but no further updates are available at this time.
The driver of the vehicle, a Dighton woman, was transported by the Berkley Fire and Rescue Department to a Rhode Island hospital.
The Taunton Fire Department also provided assistance at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Dighton Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
